The Schubiger furniture story

History of a Swiss family business

Brothers Urs (left) and Jürg Schubiger (right) are the third generation to run Zurich's largest furniture store. A family spirit, the appreciation of employees as the most important asset, a strong service ethos and a love of their home country of Switzerland are values that the family business has lived by since its foundation.

Swiss quality is a tradition at Schubiger Möbel

With a great deal of pride and over 100 employees, Schubiger Möbel promotes Switzerland as a production location. The range of high-quality furniture from renowned Swiss manufacturers such as Willisau, Bico, Strässle, Schaffner, Intertime, Vifian, Riposa and many more also contributes to this. As "es echts Schwiizer Möbelgeschäft", Swiss Made products, which are manufactured with great care and a sustainable awareness, are an important part of the company philosophy. Thanks to its membership of the European Purchasing Association VME (with a purchasing volume of over 2.5 billion euros), Schubiger Möbel benefits from favourable purchasing prices and can therefore offer its customers high quality at attractive prices.

Even though the furniture industry is changing, the Schubiger brothers know how to recognise the signs of the times and how to stay true to the values that have been in place since the opening. A short interview.

You are the third generation to run the Schubiger furniture store. What is different today compared to 30 or 60 years ago, when your father and grandfather ran the business?

Urs Schubiger: Both today and in the past, as a businessman you were always confronted with problems and new challenges. They are simply different today than they used to be, because the market is changing faster. To summarise: it was exciting in the past and it is certainly at least as exciting and challenging today.

What are the advantages of working with your own brother?

Urs Schubiger: It's a good feeling when you have someone from the family on the management team who you can rely on without hesitation. As we both have exactly the same goals, we are also pulling in the same direction.

Jürg Schubiger: We also have a good private bond within the family and don't lose sight of each other. This is very important to us and was already cultivated by our father.

We also often talk internally about doing something "Schubiger like". What does this feeling/work attitude mean to you personally?

Urs Schubiger: This word came about by chance many years ago. It describes our quality standards and is intended as a guideline for our behaviour towards other employees and, above all, our customers.

Jürg Schubiger: And as a family business, we want our customers, but also our employees, to feel that people play an important role in this company.

The furniture industry is currently undergoing major change. What is Schubiger doing to be prepared for the future?

Jürg Schubiger: The current situation really is a major challenge for the entire retail trade. With our new online presence, we can already provide our customers with a lot of inspiration on the website.

Urs Schubiger: Customers' information behaviour has changed dramatically. Whereas people used to take a tour of furniture shops, today they simply surf and find information on furniture websites. A top website is therefore a must.

Why should customers come to the Schubiger furniture store?

Jürg Schubiger: Because we have up-to-date, beautiful furniture at a good price/performance ratio, because we pass on the price advantages directly to our customers when they buy. With the help of our expert advisors, everyone can find the right furniture for their home—admittedly, quality has its price, but if you can keep your favourite piece for a little longer, it pays off.

A journey through time - three generations, one goal

1934

The first branch

Difficult times – and yet Alfred Schubiger (1904 – 1993) decides to open the first Schubiger Möbel branch with a sales area of 800 m2 in the Zähringerstrasse in Zurich. Production and workshop with 300 m2 were still located in Seilergraben at the time.

The picture shows the very first Schubiger furniture store around 1936.

Since the beginning

Schubiger Full service

High-quality customer service has been a top priority for the Schubiger furniture store from the very beginning. Delivery, repairs and good advice - this is exactly what characterises the competent service.

1948

The business flourishes

After the business flourishes in the first branch, Alfred Schubiger decides to convert the former workshop in Seilergraben into a showroom and relocates the workshop to a 1300 m2 space in Kleinstrasse.

The workforce also grows. Here you can see Alfred Schubiger on the right with his wife Anna Schubiger and the sales team from 1948.

The 2nd generation

Marius Schubiger (born 1938) joins the company. Only 10 years later, there is already a warehouse with 5,200 m2 and a 2,600 m2 branch in the old Volketswil shopping centre. At the end of the 1970s, he decided it was time to take the next step and built the current sales outlet on Ueberlandstrasse, which at the time had 9,000 m2 sales area and integrated administration.

Mid 1970s

Pick-up furniture

Take-away furniture, known as pick-ups, was a real novelty at Schubiger, as customers could immediately furnish their homes with a few pieces of furniture.

Outstanding rush to the opening

15,000 people were expected to attend the opening of the first furniture centre in Zurich - 21,000 came and enjoyed the 4-day festive atmosphere and marvelled at the latest furniture.

from 1995

The 3rd generation

Urs Schubiger joins the company in 1995 and is now a partner and member of the Board of Directors. His brother Jürg Schubiger becomes a partner and Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1999. Together with Marius Schubiger, they plan the remodelling of the branch on Ueberlandstrasse.

from 2002

Zurich's largest furniture centre

The remodelling is completed and the shop on Ueberlandstrasse now covers a full 15,000 m2 making it Zurich's largest furniture centre. Its location close to the centre of Glatt and good public transport connections make it easy to reach to this day and attracts furniture lovers from all over Switzerland.

2007

Opening of the Regensdorf branch

Time for an expansion - not only of the storage area, but also of the sales area. The Schubiger family therefore decides to build the current logistics centre in Regensdorf with 17,500 m2 and a new sales area. The opening takes place in 2008.

2015

Launch of the online shop

After almost a year of planning, the first online shop from Schubiger Möbel was launched in April 2015, where you can now buy the most interesting new products and beautiful design classics around the clock.

2018/2019

Modernisation of the sales areas

The Schubiger shop in Zurich is getting a new look. From 2018 to 2019, the sales areas on all floors of the 5-storey building will be modernised in line with the latest design concepts. While a clear division of the living areas ensures better orientation, the decorative design with a great love of detail promises even more inspiration. The box-spring bed range on the 3rd floor will also be expanded as part of the remodelling. On around 12,000 m2 customers can now look forward to an even more varied shopping experience.

2019

Website redesign

In April 2019, the Schubiger website was given a new look. The visual realisation is modern and elegant and remains user-friendly and simple thanks to the clean design. Technical innovations such as the furniture configurator, simplified filter options and a product comparison simplify online shopping for customers at Schubiger Möbel.

2021

Relaunch of our website

In December 2021, the Schubiger Möbel website will be given a completely new foundation. You can now filter your selection more easily and find your furniture favourites more quickly. We are refining our product range and broadening our product offering with even more categories, for example in the area of home textiles & kitchen accessories.
